DUCAL CASTLE IN ZATOR
The palace in Zator, though still referred to as the Castle, has long ceased to serve a defensive function, but is a representative estate. It is currently not open to the public, but it is worth seeing, if only while walking around the area.
The Ducal Palace is located in Zator, in the southeastern part of the old town, on the slope of the Skawa River. The origins of this royal residence date back to 1445, when the Duchy of Zator was established. A huge portion of the building was destroyed in the 17th century during the war with the Swedes. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Ducal Castle in Zator was transformed into a palace in neo-Gothic style. In addition to the remodeling of the interiors, such elements as the avant-corps gate tower and outbuildings were also added. The entire area is surrounded by a landscape park consisting of several gardens.
The castle repeatedly changed owners; it belonged to the Dunin, Tyszkiewicz and Potocki families, among others. It is the Potockis who currently own the property.
Regrettably, the palace interiors are not currently open to the public, however, you can take a walk near the royal residence and enjoy the decorations placed on the façade, including the tracery ornaments and arcaded cornices. The green area encircling the residence is a remnant of a beautiful two-level terrace garden.
The palace in Zator is listed in the register of monuments of the Małopolska province.
